Smith's 4" Natural Arkansas Sharpening Stone is a fine novaculite stone that removes only a modest amount of metal while it polishes the cutting edge, so a single stone handles both reprofiling and finishing in the same pass. The 4" x 1" stone is a 1,000-grit natural Arkansas — genuine novaculite quarried stone, not a synthetic or diamond abrasive — mounted on a moulded plastic base with a removable lid. The lid protects the stone when it is not in use, and during sharpening it can be fitted into the bottom of the base to extend its height, so the user's fingers grip lower down and stay clear of the knife's cutting edge as it is drawn across the surface. That makes it a safer stone to use than an unguarded block, particularly for anyone sharpening larger fixed-blade or hunting knives. It suits pocket, hunting, fishing and kitchen knives and general cutting tools, and its compact size means it travels easily in a tackle bag, tool box or rucksack pocket.
