The Nordik Plain Pain is a hand-free, mouth-blown fox call from Swedish predator-calling specialist Nordik, built to reproduce the range of distress and anguish sounds that draw a fox in close. Because it is played entirely by mouth, both hands stay free to keep hold of the rifle as a fox commits to the call – useful when a response comes quickly. The membrane inside is asymmetric, broader and thicker on one side, thinner on the other, so blowing through each face produces a different pitch: a deeper, heavier distress note from the broad side, a lighter, higher one from the thin side. Biting down at three points across each face – dead centre for a general cry of pain, and progressively towards either edge for finer tonal control – gives six workable tones from the one call, with volume set purely by breath pressure. Nordik suggest working it in bursts of 15–25 seconds, mixing long and short notes together, with 3–4 minutes of quiet between sequences, and shortening that gap in open ground where a fox can see there is nothing drawing it in. Like any mouth call, it rewards practice.
