A jacket that has stopped beading has usually not failed. Its outer face is dirty, and dirt holds water against the fabric. Nikwax is a two-step system and skipping the first step is why most reproofing jobs disappoint.
Step one — clean. Techwash lifts the grime without leaving the detergent residue that ordinary washing powder does. Ordinary detergent is itself a cause of wetting out.
Step two — proof, and match the product to the fabric. TX.Direct is for waterproof-breathable shells, and comes in both wash-in and spray-on. Use the spray-on where the garment has a wicking liner you do not want proofed. Cotton Proof and Wax Cotton Proof are for traditional cotton and waxed cotton. Polar Proof is for fleece.
Footwear splits the same way: Footwear Cleaner first, then Nubuck & Suede Proof for suede and nubuck, or the leather conditioner and wax for smooth leather. Do not put wax on nubuck — it will flatten the nap permanently.
