Work & Casual Trousers

    Filter

This is the work and casual side of the trouser range - Dickies, Caterpillar, Hard Yakka and denim, with a few outdoor lines alongside. If you are looking for stalking or shooting trousers, they are on their own pages: Hunting & Shooting Trousers and Waterproof Trousers.

Holster pockets: know what you are buying

A good deal of this range - the Dickies Holster Universal FLEX, the Hard Yakka Toughmaxx Lite holster pant - carries hanging nail pockets at the front. They are excellent on site, where you want fixings to hand and you are standing up.

They are a nuisance everywhere else. They catch on everything getting into and out of a vehicle, they will not sit comfortably in a highseat, and they snag on wire. If the trousers are for keepering or general estate work rather than the trade, buy the plain-fronted version of the same trouser.

Cotton drill and what it does when it gets wet

Most traditional work trousers are cotton drill or a poly-cotton. Dry, they are tough, quiet and cheap to replace - a reasonable choice for rough work where you will tear something.

Wet is the problem. Cotton wets out, holds the water, goes cold and stays cold, and takes a full day to dry. For anything where you expect to be wet for hours, a technical field trouser or a waterproof over-trouser is the honest answer, not a heavier cotton.

Stretch panels and Flex fabrics, common through the Dickies and Caterpillar lines here, make a real difference if you spend time kneeling or climbing.

      Sizing

Work trousers are generally sold in fixed leg lengths rather than a single unhemmed length - check the leg as well as the waist before ordering. Australian sizing, on the Hard Yakka lines, tends to run long in the leg for a given waist.
